The 40-hour Radiation Safety Officer Course provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to manage and oversee radiation safety programs in accordance with U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations, Agreement State requirements, and applicable federal standards (OSHA, EPA, DOT). The course establishes a strong scientific foundation in radiation physics, radioactivity, and biological effects, then builds into operational topics such as instrumentation, regulatory compliance, radiation monitoring, emergency response, shielding, surveys, and program management.

Trainees will learn how to interpret and apply regulatory requirements, maintain ALARA programs, conduct radiation surveys, manage sealed sources and radioactive materials, oversee personnel dosimetry programs, investigate abnormal events, and maintain complete and accurate records for compliance.

This course meets the training expectations outlined in NUREG-1556 series guidance for RSOs and prepares participants for roles in medical, industrial, academic, and research settings.
