Work Arrangement: Primarily remote in the United States, with occasional travel

Position Summary

Amalgamate Solutions is a veteran-owned radiation safety consulting firm based in the Raleigh-Durham area. We are seeking a senior nuclear safety engineer or health physicist to support nuclear safety, radiation protection, regulatory compliance, and facility design work across multiple client projects.

This role will begin as a remote contract position. The specialist will work independently and with multidisciplinary teams to evaluate technical information, identify safety and compliance issues, and prepare clear, practical recommendations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Research and draft DOE authorization, safety basis, and related nuclear safety material.
  • Review facility designs, drawings, calculations, procedures, and technical reports for nuclear safety and radiation protection considerations.
  • Evaluate shielding, radiation zoning, contamination controls, ventilation, monitoring, radioactive material handling, and waste management interfaces.
  • Support hazard evaluations and preliminary classification of safety-related structures, systems, and components.
  • Relate applicable requirements to design parameters and document missing inputs, assumptions, and decisions.
  • Prepare technical comments, reports, compliance evaluations, and calculations within your qualifications.
  • Participate in project meetings, coordinate with discipline specialists, and help resolve technical comments.
  • Support radiation safety programs, licensing, audits, or corrective actions when assigned.
  • Maintain traceable technical records and follow applicable quality, confidentiality, and document control requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Substantial professional experience in nuclear engineering, health physics, nuclear safety, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing or reviewing DOE authorization, safety basis, or comparable nuclear safety documentation.
  • Knowledge of radiation protection, ALARA, radioactive material controls, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, calculations, standards, and regulatory documents.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage assignments independently, collaborate with project teams, and meet agreed deadlines.
  • Ability to handle confidential and proprietary client information.

Work eligibility: Applicants must reside in the United States and be authorized to work in the United States. Amalgamate is unable to sponsor visas. A specific assignment may require U.S. citizenship where applicable law or contract terms require it.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in nuclear engineering, health physics, radiological engineering, physics, or a related field.
  • Certified Health Physicist or Professional Engineer in Nuclear Engineering credential; either is highly desirable.
  • Experience with DOE or NRC-regulated facilities, research or advanced reactors, isotope production, or fuel-cycle operations.
  • Experience with shielding or radiation transport analysis, nuclear quality assurance, safety classification, or radioactive waste facilities.
  • Consulting, architecture and engineering, national laboratory, or reactor-vendor experience.

Contract Engagement

The position will begin as a remote contract engagement supporting work across projects. Compensation will be based on qualifications, experience, availability, and assignment requirements.

Please provide a résumé, your availability, and either nonconfidential or redacted examples of relevant technical writing and design review work or a description of that experience.
